According to online reports, Apple has been contacted by the Japanese government over two incidents of iPod nanos overheating.

The problems are allegedly being caused by a defective lithium-ion battery, and, in both cases which took place in Tokyo, the iPods got so hot that they scorched nearby paper.

In a report by Associated Press, Economy, Trade and Industry ministry official Hiroyuki Yoshitsune said that the Japanese government is in touch with Apple to investigate the defect.

This is not the first time Apple has found itself getting burned in Japan.

In March, there was an investigation after an iPod nano overheated to the extent that it actually shot off sparks.

And, in 2006, Apple had to recall 1.8 million lithium-ion Sony-made laptop batteries again because of an overheating issue.
