Dell has announced that it is going to extend the warranties on a whole host of its laptops following on from the admittal that they may be affected by a faulty chipset.

In July, we reported that a fault with Nvidia chips could see up to 34 lines of laptops from HP and Dell suffering from a black screen or booting problems.

Dell said that laptop models going back to November 2007 may be affected by a flaw with their chipsets.

It explained in a statement that 10 lines may suffer from GPU problems, which are caused by a "weak die/packaging material set, which may fail with GPU temperature fluctuations".

Both companies are now taking action, with Dell now offering a 12-month limited warranty enhancement.

In a statement, it explains: "For all customers worldwide, we plan to add 12 months of coverage for this issue to the existing limited warranty up to 60 months from the date of purchase for the following systems: Dell Precision M2300; Latitude D630; Vostro Notebook 1400; Dell Precision M4300; Latitude D630c; Vostro Notebook 1510; Dell Precision M65; Latitude D820; Vostro Notebook 1710; Inspiron 1420; Latitude D830; XPS M1330; Latitude D620; Vostro Notebook 1310; and the XPS M1530".

More details of the service plan are going to be released in the coming weeks so we'll keep you posted.

  • I read this earlier somewhere else, and immediately thought good things. But upon furthur analysis the term 'limited warranty enhancement' in their disclosure bothers me somewhat.

    I don't just want the warranty of the GPU extended when the abnormal level of heat that that individual part is going to emit will likely damage other components of an equally delicate temperament within the chassis. Not least in one of the sub-notebooks where all of the components are so tightly clustered together.     Posted by L.Rawlins, UK
  • my original warranty expires in about 10 days

    so i wish they would tell me more about what is going to happen with this because i need to expend it somehow, but if they are going to offer discounts, i wish they would come out and say it already     Posted by ercc, usa
  • In response to Rawlins statement of not wanting just the GPU warranty increased.

    The Heat is not abnormal the chip is just poorly made. Any other well functioning GPU is running at a similar temperature. I don't see why they should extend the warranty on everything as that problem doesn't effect anything else.     Posted by miki, NZ
