BT has revealed plans to roll out fibre-based, "super-fast" broadband to up to 10 million homes by 2012.

The £1.5 billion scheme will offer top speeds of up to 100Mbps - but with the potential for speeds of more than 1000Mbps in the future.

These kind of speeds would enable very high speed up- and downloads of high-def movie and music content, online gaming and uber-fast browsing - the likes of which we can only really imagine now.

As to where you'll be able get the super-fast service, BT is only saying that it will "work with government and regional and local authorities on the roll out plans", although it does say both urban and rural areas will benefit.

BT says the areas that don't get the new fibre-based services, will see copper-based ADSL2+ will deliver nationwide speeds of up to 24Mbps.

These plans are all dependent on regulatory bits and bobs, with an Ofcom consultation due well before folk actually start digging.
