BT plans massive fibre optic project in Scotland

Better broadband for the Northern Isles

BT is planning a massive project in Scotland that will see hundreds of people offered access to faster broadband connections.

The telecoms company is going to lay 70km long fiber optic submarine cable that will connect the Scottish mainland with the Northern Isles.

The project is hoped will bring the Faroe Islands, Orkney and Shetland more in line with the rest of Scotland in terms of broadband speeds.

Global Marine Systems has been commissioned to install the cable which will work with an existing microwave radio infrastructure.

BT has also promised to upgrade the 60 exchanges BT has around the islands, as well as rehauling more than 1000 exchanges across the whole of Scotland.

Dundee is already on track to become one of the UK's best connected cities after a company specialising in laying fibre optic cables in sewage systems opted to start a project in this Scottish city.
