After what seems like months of rumours and leaks, Creative has finally launched its latest Zen media player, the X-Fi.

With roughly the same design as the Zen, plus the keypad for typing, it has a 2.5-inch display and gets built-in speakers to boot.

The big change over previous models is the addition of onboard wireless LAN connectivity for wireless streaming and downloading, which allows for instant messenging with included Yahoo and MSN clients.

The other big selling point is the sound quality with Creative cramming in some in-house audio wizardry in the form of X-Fi Crystalizer and X-Fi Expand.

Battery life comes in at 5 hours for video (of which DivX, MPEG4, Motion-JPEG, WMV and Xvid will all play) and 36 hours for audio (AAC, Audible, MP3, WMA, WAV).

As with other models there's the bonus of an FM radio and voice recorder, available in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB, the player also has an SD/SDHC card slot for memory expansion.

Measuring 83 x 55 x 12.8mm and weighing in at 68.75 grams, and seemingly just on the one colour option, the range is available now in Singapore with no word yet on a UK release.

  • If this doesn't have a gyro to distinguish the opposite orientation then they've just categorically screwed every single left handed consumer alive.

It didn't matter so much on the old one but you cannot integrate an IM client and negate this incredibly simple usability flaw.

Could we please have some commentary on the availability of an accelerometer for such purposes please?

  • Yeah, ignore that. I misread my own copy. :o) Posted by L.Rawlins, UK
  • Looks cool, wonder if it is a hard drive or flash memory inside though.
Nice they support so many audio formats, as well.
