Sony talks PlayStation 3 movie download service

Expected for summer release in US, Europe later

A new download service offering movies on the PlayStation 3 is set to launch shortly, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has confirmed in a document outlining future strategy.

The service is due to go live in the States over the summer, with a release in Europe and Japan to go ahead at later dates. Official timings for the release are expected in July.

The service has been set up to rival the content on Microsoft's Xbox Live, which already offers movies and TV shows from companies such as MTV, Warner Bros., Paramount and National Geographic.

SCEJ plans to expand its video content to other products by 2010, but the PS3 will be the first Sony device to benefit.
