Panasonic has announced the CF-U1 Toughbook, an "extremely" ruggedised UMPC based on Intel's Atom low processor technology that will be available in July.

The CF-U1 runs full-function Windows XP or Vista, is offered with a 16GB or 32GB solid state disk, 1GB of RAM, WLAN and Bluetooth and that Atom-ness means battery life comes in at 9 hours.

Weighing in at 1060 grams, it has a sunlight viewable 5.6-inch touchscreen, an ergonomic design with anti-slip coating, and a glove-friendly keyboard.

Capable of surviving falls from 1.2 metres, it's water and dust resistant and can be used in very cold and quite hot temperatures.

Options are varied and can include GPS, HSDPA module, RFID, barcode readers, camera and fingerprint reader as suits the business user's requirements.
