PS3 to get break-apart Wiimote controller

Motion-sensing games incoming?

16 June 2008 10:41 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Sony is working on a new Wii-like controller for the PlayStation 3, a gaming site has claimed quoting anonymous industry "sources".

The new controller will have the ability to "break apart" into two separate units, each of which will contain an accelerometer for Wiimote-like motion-sensing functionality.

No timescales have been provided as to when this might come to market, but the sources suggest that working units are currently with games developers in order for them to create titles that will work with the controller.

The original controller released with the PS3, the Sixaxis, did have some motion-sensing ability, so it's not totally new to Sony, although the assumption is this new device will aim to poach the some of the Wii's marketshare.

The possibility of an official unveiling at this year's E3 event has been suggested - we will keep you informed.
