Asus to ship five million Eees this year

Aims for 50% market share in 2008

Asus company president Jerry Shen has been speaking about the number of Eee PCs the company expects to ship this year, during an investors conference.

Overall, the company is confident it will achieve over a 50% rise in year-on-year notebooks sales, with the prediction to ship a total of 6.6 million notebooks during 2008.

Regarding the Eee PC, Asus' low-cost UMPC that has spawned rivals from all areas of the industry, Shen says the company is on track to sell five million Eee units this year - two million more than industry analysts have projected.

To date, Asus has sold over one million of the little laptops and expects the market size for these new, cheap, small laptops, called "netbooks" by some, to hit ten million this year, meaning a 50% market share for Asus.
