Apple confirms "Snow Leopard" OS

More details to come on new features

9 June 2008 18:30 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Apple has confirmed that it’s working on a new OS – entitled Snow Leopard.

The confirmation came from Steve Jobs as he addressed a packed Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The new operating system, 10.6 will be shown to developers later today, although Jobs didn't confirm in his address whether or not the press would be given a look in on the new features.

The news comes 8 months after the launch of "Leopard" version 10.5 and suggests Apple intends to keep with its yearly "Autumn" update.

As Steve Jobs took to the stage at the Apple worldwide developers conference 2008 he revealed that the event was sold out - the first time ever - with over 50,000 attendees including 1000 engineers.

The new OS, will go up against Microsoft’s newly announced Windows 7, although details and a timeframe of when we are likely to see the new operating system have yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, Jobs used his annual address to tell the world that the software development kit for iPhone has now been downloaded over 250,000 times within a 95-day period and that 35% of the Fortune 500 companies in the US have started beta testing the iPhone and its Enterprise offering.

We will keep you posted.
