Samsung has launched a new touchscreen device that promises to be "everything to everyone" on the same day Apple are rumoured to be launching a 3G iPhone and we've managed to get a quick video review of it.

The new handset called the i900 or Omnia to give it its "funky" name promises to offer business users full touchscreen functionality with a business rather than consumer focus.

In the rumour mill pipeline for some time, Samsung has finally made it official, giving the i900 a proper UK launch on Monday.

The new handset will sport a 3.2-inch screen, come with HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 5-megapixel camera, accelerometer and come with two memory options 8 or 16GB. It will also feature the usual array of extras including radio and Bluetooth, and as standard with Samsung touchscreen devices offer Haptic support when you touch the screen.

  • Companies like Microsoft and Samsung need to start using their own creativity. Seriously, most stuff that Microsoft produce today are copies of Apples work. This phone here is a copy of iPhone. The sensors, the look, widgets etc.

Thanks Apple for being revolutionary. Good luck Microsoft and all the other big companies trying to catch up with Apple. Guess what; you'll NEVER be as creative as Apple. Stop copying. THINK.

  • Hey Fulwlfdo, Microsoft own 25% of Apple, so they're only copying their own designs. I use Apple computers at home, I'm Microsoft Certified but only use Windows if I have to yet I've chosen the Samsung over iPhone 3g because Apple lock you to a network I detest, want to charge for everything including making any changes to your own phone, can't produce a phone with a decent camera and don't give functionality like being able to open email attachments on the phone. The i900 has a decent camera and comes with Office so it's more practical. If all you want is a poser toy, go for the iPhone, if you want something you can actually use in real life go for the Samsung. Posted by daviesg, UK
  • Heyy can any one tell me what to choose, iPhone or Omnia, I m confused Posted by sajid, Maldives
  • I would choose the Omnia. December time can't come more quickly for me! There were a few bugs with the Omnia at first with Vodafone in the UK, but last week I went in to the shop for an hour to test run with one. It seems they have fixed most of the buggy software and it was running like a dream!
So customisable, a powerful camera, a good web browser, good battery life, lots of software to download for it for free, word, excel etc for your needs. Come on people stop getting pulled in by the iphone. The iphone had it's day when it first came out (it is a very good looking usable phone) but to be quite honest for what you get, your paying for the name and the smooth touch screen nothing more! If you want more power at your finger tips go with the Omnia. Samsung have nearly got it perfect with this one. If only for the slight bugs it first had software wise which have more or less been fixed and the fact the touch screen isn't quite as smooth as the Iphone, I have found the Omnia to be a great phone!!!
Apple needs to move on swiftly now to make something better in the iphone v3. To beat the Omnia it will need at least...
MMS messaging! (come on what a simple thing to miss out!)
    5MP or 8MP camera!
Easily customisable software to put on it that doesn't cost you anything so you don't have to jail break it (come on!)
    Many other things etc. . . .

I am not an Apple hater or fan and neither a Samsung fan. I have always stuck first with Nokia and then Sony Ericsson, but this time round I'm making a move to Samsung because they in my eyes they have done it with the Omnia.

All I say is that I see a lot of loyal Apple fans out there who defend Apply to the core no matter what. Take it from my point of view. Open your eyes and really look at the stats! If you branded the Omnia with the apple logo instead of Samsung, would you go running to it?

    I rest my case....

  • Had my Omnia for a month or so now, and to be honest I'm a bit disappointed.

The touch screen is haphazard - most of the time it seems to think my 'drags' are 'selects' and my 'selects' are drags. Especially annoying when I'm searching for contacts

Don't use the Samsung Touch Player - it might look better than Windows Media but it insists that the Storage Card is full as soon as you construct your library, even if it's really only a quarter full

The automatic screen rotation seems to have a mind of its own, switching orientation sometimes when I barely move the screen, other times requiring a hefty shake

However, feature-wise it's packed and does most of the stuff I bought it for quite well, like synchronising with my laptop, SatNav, Music/Radio. Browsing the internet is ok - let down by the fact that many sites (of course) are not designed for small screens

And, for the style conscious, it does look as good as the iPhone

  • I got mine rather than the iphone because the i900 supports sterio bluetooth headphones. the iphone don't.
Came from old iMate PDA, so windows 6 well known.
