Blu-ray to use same DRM protection as HD-DVD

Unfied format becomes one step closer

Toshiba and Sony may not be able to create a single high definition disc format for the next range of DVD players, but that hasn't stopped the two companies using the same security technology on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs.

News has come that Sony's Blu-ray discs will employ the same digital rights management (DRM) anti-copying technology as the rival HD-DVD format, the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has revealed.

The discs, recorders and players will use the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) to prevent unauthorised disc copying, the system already used by Toshiba's HD-DVD ready devices.

Industry pundits are hoping that the news will bring closer the possibility of a unified format, something that both camps seem keen on creating without giving up too much away of their own technology in the process.
