Channel 4 plans DAB dongle for mobile phones

To help promote its new radio stations to yoof audience

Channel 4 plans to launch a DAB plug-in device for mobile phones, reports The Times.

Apparently execs at Channel 4 radio believe the new electronic device that will enable mobile phone users to tune into digital radio broadcasts will "rescue" DAB broadcasting.

The Times reports that "sources" have revealed Channel 4 is currently in talks with manufacturers for dongles for both phones and iPods, and although the discussions are said to be at an early stage, it is said the new gadget, set to cost no more than £20, would be marketed to young people.

Roberts Radio currently offers the "Robi" add-on device that lets iPod users receive DAB broadcasts via their MP3 player.

The broadcaster has a vested interest in seeing the platform a greater success as it is due to launch its own (now delayed) digital station E4 Radio this year.

Channel 4's next two branded stations, Channel 4 Radio, a speech station, and Pure4, are to launch in 2009.
