Bigger is better seems to be the mantra for LCD televisions at the moment, as far as Samsung Electronics is concerned.

The company has unveiled an 82-inch LCD panel, which features LED backlighting for, says Samsung, increasing the contrast ratio and improving the black level when compared with a fluorescent backlight.

The new display also delivers a 120Hz refresh rate, which is around double that offered by most other models.

The screen has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, which is four times as much as a traditional 1080p display.

The Korea Times was there at the unveiling at the Society for Information Display show in Los Angeles – and reports that the screen is massive.

It was told by Kim Sang Soo, executive vice president of the corporation's LCD Technology Centre, that he "personally [hopes] that the next-generation ultra-high definition level in the LCD panel market will open soon, with increasing consumer demand for clear viewing in households and public spaces".
