As rumour and speculation on the topic ever increase on the web, the boss of O2 has revealed the 3G version of the iPhone will be unveiled "in the coming weeks".

Speaking to press at a financial results meeting, the chairman and chief executive of Telefonica Europe, Matthew Key, confirmed there will be an announcement with Apple in "the coming weeks".

Telefonica Europe is the parent company of O2 who have the exclusive operator partner deal with Apple for the iPhone in the UK.

When asked at what point the 3G phone will be available Key said: "That's more of a question for Apple ... but over the coming weeks we will do a joint announcement with Apple as Telefonica Group".
