Microsoft has revealed that it has sold two million of its Zune portable media players since the format launched back in November 2006.

This level of sales gives Microsoft a 4% MP3 player marketshare in the US, according to NPD Group figures.

The latest statistical update Microsoft revealed for the Zune was in June 2007, when it was announced the company had hit the one million mark, slightly ahead of target.

Since then Microsoft launched its second gen Zune range, increasing its offerings with smaller flash-based players as well as the larger HDD models.

In the States, SanDisk is second in terms of marketshare with 11%, while Creative's share has dropped to 2%.

Apple is still far and above all competitors selling over 10 million devices worldwide in the last quarter alone, and having hit the 100 million milestone last year.
