Neil Young is to become the one of the first music artists to release his entire back catalogue on Blu-ray discs.

Because Blu-ray discs can hold more data that CDs or DVDs, the coming-soon collections will boast high-resolution audio as well as more extras than would have been possible on the older formats.

The first installment of Young's archive will cover the years 1963 to 1972 and will be released as a 10-disc set this autumn on Reprise/Warner Bros. Records.

The launches will also include previously unreleased songs, videos, handwritten manuscripts and other memorabilia and in addition, thanks to the BD-Live functionality, fans can download more content like songs, photos and tour information directly to the Blu-ray discs as the content becomes available.

"Previous technology required unacceptable quality compromises", Neil Young said in a statement. "I am glad we waited and got it right."
