Xbox wins on day one sales

Everyone knew it was going to be one of the biggest games of the year, but being the first GTA game to be released simultaneously on multi-format, the competition between the two rival consoles was always going to be intense.

As such, Chart Track has followed the sales of both versions closely, and their data would suggest that round one goes to Xbox. The Microsoft system took 55% of the total 609,000 games that were sold in the first 24 hours.

In fact, Chart Track data shows GTA sales were record breaking for the console, with 335,000 copies being sold, beating previous record-holder Halo 3's first day sales of 266,000.

GTA IV for the PS3 sold over 60,000 less that its rival, totaling a still very respectable 274,000 copies in 24 hours - also a record-breaking performance for the console.

"It's been a very good 24 hours for both Sony and Microsoft", ChartTrack director Dorian Bloch told MCV.

"I think both of them will be pretty elated with the figures. Even if If Rockstar don't even sell one more unit, the current figure would still make for an astounding week one performance."
