Just days after its announcement that it is going to offer fixed rate deals for Skype to landline calls, Skype has announced a foray into the mobile phone market.

Skype has today released a beta version of its service which includes features such as Skype-to-Skype and SkypeOut calls, group-chat and presence (seeing which of your friends are online).

The beta will work on about 50 Java-enabled mobile phones from Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson.

Some features, however, will only be supported in eight markets: Brazil (Rio de Janeiro), Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

This beta phase is expected to last several months, after which a public version of the application will be made available to millions of mobile phone owners around the world.

The mobile download is available now.
