Nintendo denies new DS

E3 launch not on the cards for next-gen handheld

Nintendo has moved to officially quash rumours about a new, next-gen DS handheld coming this summer - for what it's worth.

According to the rumour, Nintendo was to unveil the redesigned DS, dubbed the "DS Extreme" at E3 2008 this summer, 2 years after the launch of the DS Lite and 4 years after the original DS launched.

The news came out of Japan from a quote by Hirokazu Hamamura, the head of Japanese firm Enterbrain who publish, among other things, gaming magazine Famitsu.

As is the way with games hardware companies, regardless of whether or not a new product is imminent, Nintendo has now issued a statement denying this:

"We cannot comment on the specifics of what will be announced at E3, but at the very least there won't be anything like what Mr. Hamamura suggested, so would like to clearly deny this. We're having a hard time understanding what kind of evidence [Mr. Hamamura] had for saying this."
