eMusic celebrates 200 millionth download

Musical milestone

15 April 2008 9:28 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Online music service eMusic is celebrating a milestone with its 200 millionth song download.

The figure was reached around 4 and a half years after the store's November 2003 launch of its MP3-based subscription service.

What makes the milestone more notable is that it has been reached without the help of most major labels, as eMusic relies mainly on independents for its content.

By comparison, Apple has sold more than four billion songs since launching its music download service, iTunes, in April 2003.
