Nintendo DS fans are rumoured to be getting a new handheld console at the gaming expo E3 later this year according to whispers on the web.

The rumours are coming out of Japan from Hirokazu Hamamura, the head of Japanese firm Enterbrain who publish, among other things, gaming magazine Famitsu.

According to the rumour, Nintendo will unveil the next-generation DS at E3 2008 this summer, 2 years after the launch of the DS Lite and 4 years after the original DS launched.

Gizmodo is further reporting it believes that the dubbed "DS Extreme" will lose the Game Boy Advanced cartridge slot that allows gamers to play GBA games on the handheld console in an attempt to save money and space on the model.

E3 is in July. We will keep you posted.
