Almost 60% against mile-high mobiles

The European Commission has today formally given the go-ahead for plans to allow mobile phone calls from airplanes.

But 59% of respondents to a recent Pocket-lint poll do not welcome the prospect of flights sat next to someone nattering on their mobile.

The EC decision comes after a 6-month consultation and means that mobiles could be used once a plane has reached an altitude of 3000 metres or more when in European airspace.

The decision as to whether or not to offer in-flight phone services is now down to individual carriers but only 41% of you think that these services would be a good thing.

In the meantime - Ofcom and European authorities are promising to keep an eye on how much airlines charge for their phone services, but maybe we should poll again once dial-and-fly passengers get their first bills...
