Fat lady sings

It's the kind of official confirmation that won't mean much to the average consumer, but the HD DVD Promotional Group - the folks tasked with making a success of the Toshiba-backed format - has been formally dissolved.

The plug was finally pulled yesterday, reports The Register: Hardware, as the organisation formally voted itself out of existence.

Toshiba announced that it would discontinue all manufacture of HD DVD hardware back in February, conceding defeat in the high profile format war with rival next-gen platform Blu-ray.

HD DVD now exists in a kind of "format purgatory" that comes under the guardianship of the DVD Forum, another official body who's days are limited.
