Sony has invited members of the media to its press conference at Mobile World Congress 2016, due to be held in Barcelona in February.

The Sony launch event will be held on Monday 22 February, slotting into a typical space after big Sunday - the day we expect to see a number of new flagship launches, such as the Samsung Galaxy S7 models

For Sony's mobile operation, however, there's little hint at what to expect. There's no suggestion from the simple invite and with the Xperia Z5 models only appearing at IFA 2015 in September 2015, it's probably too soon for Sony to be updating those handsets.

That hasn't stopped speculation surrounding the Sony Xperia Z6, but we suspect there will be a mid-range handset updated instead.

In terms of ageing products, it might be wearables that see the biggest bang. The Sony SmartWatch 3 launched at IFA 2014 so it's one of the oldest devices in Sony's current portfolio.

Elsewhere, with the Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet looking strong in 2015, it might be time for Sony to invigorate its smaller tablet offering: the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact not only has a convoluted name, but was also a 2014 launch.

Sadly there's been little in the way of rumours relating to Sony's plans for MWC, but we'll be there to bring you all the big stories, as they happen.
