As the new year starts to ramp up there are exciting times ahead in the world of entertainment. And if you so happen to have a streaming devices, such as a Roku set-top-box or Streaming Stick, you are in for a treat and there are some real pearls waiting for you to discover.

Whether you have a subscription to a particular service or are willing to pay cash for a digital download, there are some excellent movies and TV shows on offer across the different platforms this week.

Cloud Eight FilmsSelma

Based on the ground breaking march lead by Dr Martin Luther King Jnr, the Oscar winning Selma features a mainly British cast representing some of the most prominent figures in American political history.

It's now available to watch on Sky Movies, and therefore can be streamed on demand if you have a NOW TV Sky Movies Pass.

20th Century FoxThe X-Files 2

With an all-new mini-series set to air on Channel 5 in the UK soon, Amazon has added all nine of the previous seasons to its Amazon Video service to view as part of a Prime subscription.

Channel 5 is yet to reveal when it plans to air the latest, but this is an ideal opportunity to catch up on one of the greatest sci-fi telly shows in modern times.

Paramount PicturesThe Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese finally won an Oscar for this tale of opulence and corruption, starring the actor also tipped for a leading actor Oscar in this year's awards, Leonardo DiCaprio.

Both funny and, at times alarming, the true and often comical story of Jordan Belfort is brought to life by a fantastic cast, that also includes Jonah Hill. It's now available to stream on Netflix as part of a subscription.

BBCWar and Peace

Two episodes of the BBC's five-part adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace are now available to view on BBC iPlayer.

The book is well over 1,000 pages long, so the Beeb has done a great job in condensing it to fit into a mini-series format. It has also clearly thrown considerable money at the production, with every scene beautifully directed.

Available to buy now, Everest charts another true story.

Two groups of climbers are caught in a severe blizzard as they attempt to climb to the peak of the Earth's tallest mountain. It is a tense tale of survival as the groups simple try to stay alive.
