Happy new year! Christmas is well and truly over and we enter a new year full of hope and ambition. However, we also still have half a box of Quality Street left and a Tupperware box of turkey bits that have definitely seen better days but is still edible. Just.
What we need to accompany them is some prime entertainment of the movie and TV type. And while there is plenty on terrestrial television at this time of year, isn’t it better to watch what you want when you want?
That’s why we recommend you opt for a streaming service through a set-top-box or streaming stick, such as those from Roku, to get to the shows and films that float your boat the most.
Here are five we’ve chosen that are available for you to watch right now, on different services and apps, to make even that search for thrills and spills even easier.
Straight Outta Compton
(Sky Store, Amazon Video, Sainsbury’s Entertainment on Demand)
The highly rated biopic of 80s rap group NWA is now available to buy across different movie streaming services.
O’Shea Jackson Jnr’s portrayal of Ice Cube is particularly astonishing, not least because he looks exactly like him thanks to being, well, his son and all.
Kingsman: The Secret Service
One of our favourite films of 2015 should also be high on your list to watch at the beginning of 2016, especially if you’ve not seen it yet and have a Sky Movies Pass for NOW TV.
Director Matthew Vaughn crafted a superbly funny and violent masterpiece from the Mark Millar comic book and there are great performances from the cast all round. Relative newcomer Taron Ederton is superb in the lead role as Eggsy, as is Colin Firth as Galahad.
Inspector Gadget: New Year’s Eve Countdown
Netflix brought Inspector Gadget back to UK screens recently and this special two-minute animated adventure is well worth a watch for little’uns.
It adopts 3D animation, rather than the original series’ 2D, but the humour and silliness is as familiar as his robotic legs and cry of “Go, go, gadget!” You can also catch up with the entire first season of the 1983 original cartoon.
Thriller Child 44 stars man of the moment Tom Hardy as an ex-military policeman who investigates a series of grisly child murders.
What makes the adaptation of Tom Rob Smith’s award winning book more interesting than the average serial killing tale is that it is set in a Stalin-era Soviet Union. A place and a time where such crimes were swept under the big, red carpet.
Big Fat Quiz
Broadcast on Channel 4 on Boxing Day, the Big Fat Quiz looks back at 2015 in a less than serious fashion. We’ve always loved the 100 minute specials each year and this one is no exception.
Comedians Rob Brydon, David Mitchell, Richard Ayoade, Gre Davies, Job Brand, and TV presenter Claudia Winkleman form three teams tackling the year’s events in question form, while Jimmy Carr once again hosts. Top laughs.
