YouTube offers a new service that's more than the current open-to-all video player. It's called YouTube Red.
YouTube Red is a paid-for subscription service. Essentially, the service is way for people to pay for ad-free peace when watching YouTube videos. Yup. You now need to pay to stop advertising, it seems. But there's more...
Is this a competitor for Spotify? Or is this something unique?
Here's what you need to know about YouTube Red:
YouTube Red is ad-free
At it's core, the service is about removing adverts. Since Google-owned YouTube makes a lot of its money from adverts, it can't really remove them without making you pay up. It also says this goes toward helping artists make money. By allowing the viewer to pay, flitting between videos will no longer require waiting around for ads to finish. That applies to anywhere the paid for account is signed in.
So, if you're logging in on a smart television, you'll be able to watch videos instantly, without interruptions.
YouTube Red works offline
Another feature of YouTube Red that adds more value to the subscription price is offline viewing on a phone or tablet, meaning downloading a movie to watch when on the train should be easy now. On top of that: you're able to play videos in the background. This is the area that may sway some people over Spotify, as it means video access with the ability to use the app as a music player.
But this goes further...
YouTube Red subscriptions include Google Music
Yup. If you shell out for YouTube Red, you get a Google Music subscription for free. And this works vice versa. Google Music allows for storage of up to 50,000 of your offline songs to be streamed, access to a 35 million song catalogue, offline listening, and everything is of course ad-free.
YouTube Red has original content
Another plus for the YouTube Red subscription is new content. YouTube will provide exclusive videos for subscribers, which everyone else will not have access to. These are described as "new, original shows and movies from some of YouTube biggest creators".
But what that actually results in - quality-wise - isn't clear.
How much is YouTube Red?
The subscription service launched on 28 October. It costs $9.99 per month. International availability has been confirmed.
