Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy View, taking the crown as the largest Android mobile device on the market. The Galaxy View was first mentioned during consumer electronics show IFA when Samsung used its conference to tease a few images of a new device, in a new category.

Little more was said about the device following the tease, leaving us none the wiser but now all has been revealed and Samsung has delivered a device that it considers to be a "new dimension in mobile entertainment experience".

Here is everything we know about Samsung Galaxy View and what it offers.

Samsung Galaxy View release date

Samsung may have taken the wraps of the Galaxy View's specs and features but it has yet to announce a release date.

We will update this feature as soon as we hear more but we would hazard a guess that it will be available before Christmas.

Samsung Galaxy View design

The Samsung Galaxy View is a very large black tablet that features a built-in, two-way kickstand. It measures 451.8 x 275.8 x 11.9mm and it weighs 2.65kg so when we said large, we mean large.

It's not the kind of device you'll be taking on your daily commute, but it is the kind of device Samsung wants you to use at home to watch video and media content.

Samsung Galaxy View display

The Samsung Galaxy View steps into new areas with an 18.4-inch large display sporting a resolution of 1920 x 1080, for a pixel density of 120ppi.

This immediately puts the Galaxy View more into TV territory than tablet territory as while many of Samsung's devices sport Quad HD resolutions including the recently launched Galaxy Tab S2, many TVs are Full HD.

Samsung has claimed the touchscreen screen is optimised for media consumption so look at the Galaxy View as more of a second screen device rather than a big tablet.

Samsung Galaxy View hardware

The Samsung Galaxy View comes complete with a 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, with a microSD slot for storage expansion.

There is a 2.1-megapixel camera on the front for video calling and a 5700mAh battery capacity promises 8 hours of video play before you'll need to charge it. There are two 4W stereo speakers on board too, as well as Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi and a slot for a NanoSIM.

All these specs point to the fact that the Galaxy View isn't just another tablet, despite looking like one. Samsung already has numerous tablet options available so consider the Galaxy View like a portable mini TV, designed to stand on your coffee table for watching things like Netflix, sharing photos and browsing the web.

Samsung Galaxy View software

The Samsung Galaxy View will run on Android 5.1.1, as the rumours expected. Samsung has created what it is calling a video-optimised user interface for this device however, so don't expect the exact same experience as other Samsung devices.

There is a dedicated home screen for showcasing videos and content series in one place and Samsung has said the device will sport a wide range of entertainment features to allow users to experience video, music and games, along with other functions such as video calls.

There is also something called Family Square that offers users a customised dashboard that can connect to friends and family. No mention of multi-view or multi-tasking features however, so again, highlighting the fact that the View sits in a different category.

Samsung Galaxy View price

Like the release date, Samsung has yet to reveal how much the Galaxy View will cost. We will update this feature as we learn more, but for now, read our first impressions with the 18.4-inch device to see what we make of it.
