The Coolpix AW130 sees Nikon update its tough camera in what is pretty much a yearly move.

The design has been more or less the same over the past three iterations of the this camera, and we're happy there's still a camouflage model for those armchair warriors out there who covet such things (like us).

There is a new, more pronounced, grip on the right-hand side for your fingers, adorned with the NFC logo, as this camera isn't just tough, it's well connected too.

Otherwise the bodywork is pretty similar to previous versions, as are the internal specifications. One of the upgrades is water protection to a new depth: the AW130 can be used down to 30 metres, compared to the 18 metres of the previous model.

Looking to keep you in the picture wherever you are, the Coolpix AW130 has a depth gauge down to 35m, as well as a barometer, altimeter and GPS. There's also a full global map onboard, as well as a digital compass, so this camera will know where you are, even if you don't.

In the hand it's as sturdy as it has been in the past. The 3in OLED rear display is nice and bright and the top shutter button is nicely pronounced.

The pronounced grip and decent sized shutter button make it easier to use with gloves, with big toggle buttons on the side for GPS, Wi-Fi and motion controls.

The arrangement of zoom and shutter has also been designed to help you use it without shifting your grip, with the zoom rocker on the rear, falling under your thumb. The other controls are standard fare for Nikon.

Inside is the same 24-120mm (35mm equiv.) lens and 1/2.3in 16-megapixel CMOS sensor as previously, so we'd expect this to perform very much like the previous version of this camera. During our play time with the AW130 we didn't have the chance to test the quality, but it was fast enough to focus and capture.

You can tap to pair an NFC device for quick sharing, so it should be really easy to share your adventures on the move.
