iPlayer to get subtitles soon

By the end of the month for on demand programming

The BBC will roll out subtitles for the iPlayer from late-March, in a bid to bring the on-demand video service in line with its TV broadcasting.

The subtitles service should go live for on-demand programmes by the end of March with subtitles for streamed content by the end of May.

Jonathan Hassell, acting head of audience experience and usability at BBC, apologised for the delay, saying:

"We would have loved to include subtitles at Christmas when we first marketed the iPlayer, but unfortunately we weren't ready to do so in December."

"The team will concentrate on creating an online solution for audio description, so that people with vision impairments can get a similar experience on iPlayer as they have on TV: another big challenge."
