Garmin had devices adorning the wrists of athletes long before anyone had conceived the term "wearables". One of the big names in sport watches, Garmin has announced three additions to its range at CES 2015.

Most interesting is the Vivoactive which sees Garmin really joining the smartwatch party.

It pulls on the idea of the Vivofit sports band, providing some lifestyle tracking functions, but expands it, including built-in GPS, as well as a connection to your smartphone for notifications.

Garmin says this works on Bluetooth Smart, so will be compatible with devices running the Garmin Connect Mobile app, so that's Android and iOS devices.

It is also compatible with a heart rate monitor (sold separately or as a bundle), so you can expand the Vivoactive's skill set.

You'll be able to track running, cycling, swimming and golf activities, as well as steps, sleep and workouts.

On the smartwatch front you'll be able to keep track of calls, messages, emails and calendar notifications. You'll be able to customise the watchfaces, as well as get other information like weather.

Garmin says that the Vivoactive will give you 3 weeks of use from a single charge, or 10 hours of GPS sports tracking.

The Garmin Vivoactive is up for pre-order in the US, costing $249.99 (watch only) or $299.99 with HRM strap. No word on UK pricing just yet.

If you're not after a full watch, Garmin has also updated its Vivofit sports band, with a new version, the Vivofit 2, offering a backlit display, activity timer and auto syncing.
