Withings has followed up its Activité smartwatch with the Activité Pop, a much less expensive version with younger, fresher styling. And we've had a brief play with one at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 in Las Vegas.

The new smartwatch, which goes on sale in the US on 5 January for a third of the price of the original watch - $150 compared to $450 - comes with the same features, just not the same deluxe materials.

Like the original device, the analogue watch synchs to your smartphone to deliver a running total of how active you've been. It uses a second dial on the watch face to show your number of steps. At night it switches from that task to monitoring your sleep instead, in addition to the option to be woken via a vibration rather than a noisy ringing alarm clock.

Similar to a Nike+ FuelBand or Fitbit Flex you'll be able to see your progress throughout the day, but without the hassle of wearing a dedicated bracelet or dongle in addition to a watch.

The Pop will be available in three colours: azure, shark grey and sand. Those not impressed by the silicone strap, which matches the colour of the watch face, will be happy to hear you can quickly replace it should you wish.

A single standard watch battery powers the Pop for up to eight months, after which is can be replaced at minimal cost, a bit like the Garmin Vivofit's ethos but in what we think is a much more attractive package. The watch is also water-resistant to 30 meters.

In the flesh, the Pop is the most watch-like smartwatch on the market with those colour options really helping make it stand out. While it doesn't ooze the luxury aesthetics of the original Activité it does offer a more "Swatch" like approach to timekeeping.

"The activity tracker category has a huge problem with abandonment, so consumers don't really get to see the benefit of long-term data and the impact it can have on their health," said Cédric Hutchings, Withings' CEO. "It is time wearables step-up to what they claim to be!"

In the UK, the Withings Activité Pop will cost £119.95 and will be available at PC World/Curry's. Harrods is the exclusive UK launch partner, where the watch will be available in-store from the end of January.
