Each year Apple reveals which iPhone apps and games were big smashes in the preceding 12 months and this year is no exception. It has been an excellent year for gaming and productivity software, so there were plenty of options when it came to narrowing it down to just 50 in total.

However, members of the UK iTunes App Store team managed to settle on a healthy list of their favourites, while also picking out a winner in each category to snag Apple's highest honours. There are plenty of other recommended apps in each category too, so we've detailed them here in the one place for you to discover and download, if you haven't already.

Pocket-lintiPhone apps of 2015-2

After the success of the turn-based board game-style app Hitman Go, it made sense for Square Enix to apply the idea to another of its major licences. However, it can be argued that Lara Croft Go is an even better game, presenting plenty of puzzle action across multiple levels for £3.99. It is also, quite simply stunning to look at and has recently received a free update with extra content.

If you ever wondered what it's like to be a bat, give Dark Echo a go for £1.49. It's a completely unique adventure game where you cannot see your surroundings, just visualised sounds as they bounce off object hidden in the darkness. It's more than a little pant-wettingly scary too.

Apple also revealed that Minecraft - Pocket Edition was its most downloaded paid app of 2015 - the same as last year. However, Facebook's Messenger app was toppled by WhatsApp Messenger as the most downloaded free application this time around.
