Destiny Beta to kick off 17 July for PS4 and PS3, 23 July for Xbox One and Xbox 360

Bungie and Activision has announced when you can finally play the Destiny Beta, and most of you will get the chance this month.

Destiny is a highly anticipated role-playing, first-person shooter video game that features a "mythic science-fiction" open world setting. Bungie, the studio behind the phenomenally successful Halo franchise, is developing the game, and Activision as part of a decade-long publishing deal is publishing it. Bungie previously revealed the Destiny Beta would launch in the summer of 2014, while the worldwide launch is scheduled for 9 September.

The Destiny Beta will launch first for PS4 and PS3 console owners on 17 July at 1 PM EST. Any Xbox Live Gold subscribers who own an Xbox One or Xbox 360 will get access on 23 July at 1 PM EST. The beta period will end on 28 July at 2:59 am EST. Gamers who pre-ordered Destiny are guaranteed access into the Beta. You can pre-order Destiny from a number of retailers for £54.99 on PS4 and Xbox One and £44.99 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

“As we prepare to launch our first Beta on multiple console platforms around the world, we are excited and eager to open the flood gates,” said Harold Ryan, Bungie’s president, in a press release. “We already love to play Destiny and with your help we can be ready for our launch in September.”

Activision and Bungie also revealed three collector’s edition versions of the game: Destiny Ghost Edition (£149.99), Destiny Limited Edition (£94.99), and Destiny Digital Guardian Edition (£84.99). They each feature different ranges of special content like weapons, gear, exclusive player emblems, etc. You can pre-order them starting today at participating global retailers.

A new trailer for Destiny was released earlier this month. You can watch it above. There are definitely elements of Halo in Destiny, especially in weaponry design. We also saw a little of Portal 2 in the game - namely in the probe sent down the tunnels about halfway through an earlier Destiny demo.
