In June Apple announced a new version of its super slim iMac that is lower specced than the ones already on the market, but similarly offered at a lower price to allow those on a smaller budget a chance to jump on board team Mac.

The 21.5-inch has the same build quality and gorgeous looks as the existing model, but with a less powerful processor. It also chops the internal hard drive from 1TB to 500GB in order to cut costs.

This all means that Apple can offer the 2014 model iMac at £899 - £150 cheaper than the existing 21.5-incher.

Pocket-lint got to play with one for a wee while during the recent John Lewis Christmas in July event where it was set up amongst some other cool gadgets and we have to say, even with the drop in processing power, it still moved a fair lick when opening windows and applications.

It comes with a 1.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (the £1,049 version has a 2.7GHz quad-core equivalent) and 8GB of RAM. The screen is identical as on all other 21.5-inch models - Full HD 1920 x 1080 and LED-backlit with IPS technology. It is simply stunning to view, even though the graphics chip is on board Intel HD Graphics 5000 rather than the Nvidia dedicated tech or Intel Iris Pro as found on more pricey models.

All other specifications are identical across the board, with a FaceTime HD camera, support for an external display, SDXC card slot, four USB 3.0 ports and much more. But we suppose the main thing about the cheap iMac is that, price aside, this is an Apple machine through and through.

By that we mean that it looks stunning. Regardless of its abilities in operation, which we could only really find out after a much more intensive testing period, the ultra-thin design and aluminium body scream class. It is an object of beauty as much as it is a functioning tool. You don't get that with a massive black PC tower or even many of the all-in-one desktop solutions offered from "the other side".

The new 21.5-inch iMac is available for £899 from Apple Stores both high street and online.
