The FT reports that MySpace is in talks with leading record companies to create an ad-supported service that would allow consumers to listen to music for free on their computers.
"Several people familiar with the matter" say that the social networking company has held discussions with Universal Music, Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI.
The MySpace service would be built around advertising and consumers would be able to stream songs for free, while MySpace sold advertising based on the traffic.
The service would probably also include a means for the sites 110 million users to click on a link and pay to download songs, the same sources say.
MySpace has not commented on the rumours.
