Not getting texts after switching from iPhone to Android? Here's how to fix the iMessage bug

Apple is being sued by former iPhone user Adrienne Moore who has switched to a Samsung Android phone and has since suffered from the dreaded iMessage bug that prevents her new phone from receiving text messages sent from friends.

The bug has been known of for a while. Basically, if you use an iPhone and assign iMessage to work with your phone so that other iOS device owners can send instant messages through Wi-Fi or cellular data rather than SMS, it is a possibility that those messages could be lost in Apple's system if you switch to Android.

There are many reported cases where a sender continues to send text messages to a number that is no longer assigned to an iPhone, but as their phone's still presume it is on Apple's network it sends it as an iMessage, not an SMS text message as it should. The message gets lost completely and is inconvenient at the very least.

Moore is suing Apple as she claims the Cupertino company has not done enough to address the issue. The complaint states that people who switch from Apple to rival devices are therefore "penalised and unable to obtain the full benefits of their wireless-service contracts."

Apple itself is yet to respond to the allegations, but if you've been hit by the iMessage bug yourself, here's some ways you can attempt to remedy the issue.

How to deactivate iMessage before switching from iPhone to Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone

With a bit of foresight, you can take steps to prevent the issue occurring. Before you switch your phones over, deactivate iMessage in the iPhone's settings.

You will find the option to turn off iMessage in Settings/Messages. That way it tells iCloud that you no longer want to receive iMessages and all texts sent from other devices should now be seen as green bubbled SMS messages.

Contact Apple

You can contact Apple Support in order to get the company to turn off your iMessage service. The company's support staff can then manually unregister you.

You will need your Apple ID and relevant phone number to hand.

Contact your friends

The only other reported way to solve the issue is ensure your friends are not sending iMessages in the first place.

They can prevent sending iMessages to you in one of two ways. The first is by deactivating iMessage on their own iPhones before sending you a text. However, if they have other friends with iPhones and want to send them iMessages, they will have to deactivate and reactivate every time they send you a text. That is clearly far from ideal.

The other way they can help fix the problem their end is to unregister you as a contact and re-add you as a completely new contact. However, this method is also said to require them to switch off iMessage and reboot between the steps, so you might find not all friends are willing to do this.
