Website of the day: Designs of the Year

How do you fancy being responsible for the next big thing in design circles? Don’t worry. You don’t have to rush out and grow a neat little beard, buy some 1950s-styles specs and start riding a single speed bike. Unless you want to.

No. What we mean is, you can vote for your favourite at designsoftheyear.com, the Design Museum’s search for the most innovative, creative and, in this instance, popular new designs.

We love this idea. All too often we’re being told what the next big thing is because some anonymous judging panel stuck in a stuffy room have decided what it is. That’s how a lot of awards go.

No. Here they want all of us to take a look at a pair of competing designs and decide which we prefer.  They’re doing this every day, and the eventual winner of the “social vote” will be recognised at the awards proper.

A nice idea, well executed.
