Website of the day: Art Detective

If you’re one of those people who says “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like,” this site might not be for you, unless you just like looking at nice pictures.

It’s a bit niche, we’ll admit, but the people behind Art Detective need our help.

Across the UK there are countless works of art that are a bit of a mystery. Nobody knows who actually produced them.

Paintings change hands all the time. They get bequeathed to collections, sold at auctions, sit in attics for decades - any number of things can happen to get in the way of proving the provenance of a work of art. It’s frustrating for the owners, the museums and the galleries, and that’s why the Public Catalogue Foundation has embraced the digital age to try to crowdsource a few answers.

They’re asking for anybody who knows a bit about art to take a look through this site to see if they can name the artists.

It’s a great use of modern technology to clear up centuries-old mysteries.
