It’s the word that just won’t go away, especially now that it’s been recognised by the Oxford English Dictionary, and was voted word of the year last year:

Selfie - NOUN (plural selfies)

  • informal
A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website

It’s now nearly Easter, and it’s still ubiquitous and is probably the most used hashtag ever. If you want to see what that means in real terms, take a look at, a real-time view of all the selfies going into Instagram.

It’s a dizzying display. They pop in with alarming speed and regularity, and it’s really only the more creative ones that ever stand out, even if it’s only for a second. (Be warned - you might see the occasional flash of too much flesh). The overall experience is one of “haven’t people got better things to do?”

Apparently not. The selfie is here to stay.
