Yahoo looking to take on Netflix and Amazon by commissioning own online TV series

Yahoo is ready to enter the TV streaming business in a bigger way than ever before. It is said to be looking to commission four 10-episode comedy TV series to stream online. And is willing to pay a fair penny for quality content.

Sources that have been "briefed on the company's plans" have told the Wall Street Journal that Yahoo is close to ordering the four series, offering budgets of between $700,000 and a few millions dollars per episode.

They will be made by writers and directors with TV experience.

Not only does Yahoo want to take on Netflix and Amazon in screening original content, but it is seen as a direct salvo in the web giant's battle with Google and YouTube.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is expected to announce the TV-calibre content to advertisers during its "NewFront" event on 28 April. We should find out more about the shows and their streaming locations then.
