Samsung Galaxy S5 mini specs leak putting it in the mid-range

Just as expected Samsung should be releasing a follow-up to its flagship handset in the Galaxy S5 mini. And there's not much of a surprise in the mid-range spec department either.

The leak comes from "insider sources" of SamMobile. They claim the Samsung Galaxy S5 mini will arrive with a rather large 4.5-inch Super AMOLED screen running a 720p resolution – making it a step up from the S4 mini's qHD effort.

The processor powering the S5 mini will be a Snapdragon, likely the quad-core Snapdragon 400, but at this stage that's not confirmed by the leakster. It'll be backed by 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of storage and runs Android 4.4 KitKat, claims SamMobile.

The S5 mini won't scrimp on megapixels with an 8-megapixel rear shooter and 2-megapixel selfie-snapping cam on the front. Premium extras like an IR blaster and IP67 water-resistance are also expected along with a 2,100mAh battery. Whether the heart rate sensor and fingerprint reader of the S5 make it into the mini isn't clear at this stage, but we'd say it's unlikely if the mini is to remain affordable.

Pricing and a release date haven't been leaked but SamMobile is having a punt at June. The S4 mini was announced in May and released in July last year. It seems likely that will be repeated this year. But we'll just have to wait and see what follows the Galaxy S5 release day on 11 April.
