YouView’s future secured, all major backers agree investment extension - including BBC

Contrary to rumour and speculation in recent months, the BBC has joined the rest of the original YouView backers in pledging further investment to the service for another five years.

The new agreement includes ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BT, TalkTalk and Arqiva, as well as the Beeb, securing the platform's immediate future.

"We are delighted that all seven shareholders have committed to the future of YouView with a five year term," said YouView CEO Richard Halton.

"We have achieved a significant milestone with well over one million homes regularly using the service and high levels of usage and satisfaction as key indicators of success for the future.

"The next phase for YouView involves ambitious developments across a range of devices and we’re looking forward to achieving our long term target of 10 million connected UK homes."

Existing users of the service, it has been revealed, request over three million on demand videos a week and each customer views on average four half-hour VOD programmes in seven days.

New YouView set-top-boxes - the second generation if you like - have recently been announced, including the BT YouView+ box and Huawei's YouView+ DN371T.
