Facebook is on a roll with mobile: 200mn Instagram users, 1bn Facebook mobile users
Facebook is on a roll with its mobile apps and shows no sign of slowing down.
There are now 1 billion monthly active users on its mobile apps, Facebook announced during its call discussing the Oculus VR on Tuesday. To compare to the fourth quarter of 2013, Facebook had 945 million active mobile users out of a total of 1.23 billion users, showing significant growth.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, also let slip that Instagram now has 200 million registered users, a figure we haven't heard before. To compare, in February 2013, Instagram announced 100 million active users, only two-and-a-half years after the launch of the app. A little over a year later it has added 100 million more.
In January, Facebook announced 53 per cent of its revenue came from mobile advertising during the fourth quarter. That's a major turnaround, considering the company didn't earn any revenue on its mobile business just a few years ago.
Facebook could well take advantage of its booming mobile audience by introducing more mobile apps. Facebook reportedly plans to launch a suite of standalone apps in 2014, with some rumours suggesting they will have a focus on contacts and calendar functions.
