Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation gets a software update

Amazon has announced an update to its Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation. This is available now, for free, and should download and install automatically.

The update will bring Kindle FreeTime for personalised profiles for children, the Goodreads community for rating books, Cloud Collection to organise your items in categories, Page Flip to skim by pages or chapters, plus Enhanced Bookmarks, Highlights and Notes.

There's also the Smart Lookup feature for dictionary, X-Ray and Wikipedia information on a word immediately. And for those looking to expand their lexicon, there's Vocabulary Builder which automatically stores words looked up in the dictionary for quizing yourself later using flashcards.

Finally, Inline Footnotes have been added so users can read the entire footnote without changing page or losing their place.

If the Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation software update hasn't automatically downloaded and installed, users can manually do so via Amazon.
