Minecraft movie in the works as it crosses 100 million registered users

Top video game Minecraft will be hitting the big screen, the game's creator Markus Persson announced on Thursday.

"Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie," Persson tweeted. "I wanted to be the leak!"

Entertainment publication Deadline followed with the details, reporting that Warner Brothers had acquired the rights to the wildly popular game from Swedish indie developer Mojang AB.

Vertigo Entertainment, lead by producer Roy Lee who made The Lego Movie, will be behind the Minecraft movie for Warner Brothers. No other details of the flick were shared, still leaving us to wonder what the storyline might be and when it will be released.

Minecraft has been growing rapidly in popularity over the last few months, so it makes sense to be the next video game to be turned into a movie. On Thursday, the publisher behind the game announced that there are now 100 million registered Minecraft users, along with 14.3 million total sales on the PC.

That's a lot of fans who would go to see a Minecraft movie at the cinema.
