Although companies like Toshiba and Seagate have been promising 5TB hard drives of late, LaCie has beating them to the punch. It has started shipping what it describes as the "industry's first" 5TB external drive.

The super-sized HDD will be available as part of the company's Thunderbolt or Quadra ranges. You can plump for the standalone LaCie d2 USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series option or 2-bay or 5-bay RAID solutions: 2big and 5big. The largest LaCie 5big Thunderbolt Series has, therefore, an overall capacity of 25TB.

LaCie's Quadra range is similar but without the Thunderbolt connectivity - FireWire 800 instead, as well as USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. The 5TB drive can be bought as part of the 2big Quadra (so up to 10TB) and d2 Quadra.

The 5TB drive runs at 7200rpm and all products are now available on LaCie's online store.

Prices range from £269 for the 5TB d2 Quadra USB 3.0 to £819 for the 25TB 5big Thunderbolt.
