Valve has announced that Steam now features an experimental mode for use with the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.

Those who have used the system report that a giant floating screen is projected and head tracking allows you to look around within that.

Valve's announcement has landed a day before its Steam Dev Days, which will run 15 and 16 January. Valve is expected to show off its own VR hardware at the event.

Valve's Joe Pudwig said: "If you own an Oculus Rift dev kit you can try it out by starting Steam with '-vr' on the command line. Then press the Big Picture button to enter Big Picture + VR mode."

Exciting times ahead then, especially as Steam Machines begin to appear this year. Now they will hopefully be ready to support Oculus Rift so you could buy a machine without a screen and use only the Oculus Rift.
