Garmin has expanded its line of fitness products with the launch of the Garmin Vivofit fitness band.

Looking to capitalise on the popularity of products like the Nike+ Fuel Band, Garmin is turning its sporting experience to a new segment.

The Garmin Vivofit will track your progress, presenting you with goals and reminders so you can keep active and will monitor your steps, goal countdown, calories burnt and distance covered. It will also monitor your sleep.

There's an always-on curved display, which will also tell you the time, and Garmin says that the battery will last you over a year and can be replaced by the user.

The Vivofit is water-resistant, so you'll have no worries about wearing it in the rain, but taking things a step further, it's also ANT+ compatible, so you'll be able to use it with heart rate monitors.

That means the Vivofit can be part of a wider system, so rather than relying on motion alone to track your performance on a run, it will be able to give you heart rate data if used with a heart rate monitor strap.

At the touch of a button, you'll be able to sync the data (through your PC or smartphone) with Garmin Connect, which has been totally redesigned for 2014. You'll be able to view graphs and sign up for challenges to keep yourself motivated.

"Being able to monitor the quality of rest after retiring for the night, being challenged by personalised daily goals and doing so without having to charge it every few days, makes Vivofit a fitness band that should be on everyone's wrist," said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice-president of worldwide sales.

The Garmin Vivofit will be available in black, purple, teal, blue and slate for $129.99 (£79), or $169.99 with a heart rate monitor strap. It will available in Q1 2014.
